Frenchified Toast

One of our favorites: the Queen and the kids love it. It’s fun to let everyone customize to their liking.

The only thing French about this recipe is the suggestion to use French bread. Any favorite bread will do — it's the batter, the butter, and the pure maple syrup that counts!

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 8 slices bread (This varies with the crowd and the bread. Over time, you'll get the right sense for this.)
  1. Combine beaten eggs, sugar, vanilla, salt, pepper in a bowl.

  2. Soak the bread, a slice at a time, in the egg mixture. You'll learn over time how long to do this based on the bread and your preferences. Regular white bread soaked too long will fall apart. Crusty French bread will hold up longer.

  3. Cook your slices on a pre-heated (medium-high) skillet or griddle. Check the first slices after 2 minutes, flip when golden brown. Watch closely and avoid burning those Frenchies.

  4. Keep the done slices warm on a plate in a 200° oven until ready to serve.

  5. Serve with lots of butter and pure maple syrup (only!) and maybe some fresh berries, banana slices, or not. Powdered sugar is fun to sprinkle on. Let your eaters do their own.
